The Role of the Manager

Aim

The aim of this module is to give the management team an opportunity to explore their roles and responsibilities, raise their self awareness around their own style of working and identify how to develop respect amongst their teams as a manager and leader, so that they manage performance effectively

Objectives

The team will have the opportunity to…

  • consider what management is and what skills a manager needs to be effective
  • consider what leads to managers gaining and retaining respect
  • discuss how a manager’s role differs from a non management role and address the challenges that a management role brings
  • explore the area of exchanging expectations with managers, colleagues and team members
  • discuss what motivates your people and identify ways to improve motivation
  • identify the stages of the Work Cycle, including
    • defining a statement of purpose
    • establishing a long term vision for the team
    • setting SMART objectives
    • monitoring performance against objectives
    • giving feedback on performance
  • consider how run an effective appraisal, including
    • identifying what to plan and prepare
    • putting together a simple appraisal format
    • ensuring it is a motivating and positive discussion
  • identify a personal action plan
