The Role of the Manager Overview

Aim

The aim of this module is to give new managers the opportunity to explore the role of a manager, raise their self awareness around their own style of working and identify how to develop respect amongst their teams as a manager and leader.

Objectives

During the session all participants will have the opportunity to...

  • consider what management is and what skills a manager needs to be effective
  • consider what leads to managers gaining and retaining respect
  • discuss how your role differs from a non management role and address the issues facing a new manager
  • explore the area of exchanging expectations with managers, colleagues and team members
  • look at different behaviour types and the characteristics and consequences of each
  • identify the stages of the Work Cycle, including
    • defining a statement of purpose
    • setting SMART objectives
    • monitoring performance against objectives
    • running an effective one to one
    • giving feedback on performance
  • practice feedback skills
  • identify a personal action plan
