The City of London Corporation - Management Development Programme

The City of London Corporation is unique as a local authority, looking after residents, businesses, organisations and visitors in the square mile. As well as all the usual functions of a local authority, it also provides services as diverse as the Barbican centre and Guildhall school of music and drama, the animal reception centre at Heathrow, Epping Forest and the Port authority.

The Need

The City of London Corporation provide an extensive training programme to support all its employees in key areas of their roles.

Each department also has specific ongoing training needs, which often demand a more creative consultancy based approach.

The Solution

Focal Point have been a training partner to the City of London Corporation  for over 12 years and have specifically developed courses in the centrally run programme for Recruitment and Selection, Coaching, Supervisory Skills and Appraisal skills.

The excellent reputation we have built up for our practical, down to earth approach to developing skills, means that we are regularly asked to work with specific departments – often to tackle particularly challenging issues. Examples of specific projects we have worked on are...

  • creating a communication strategy and embedding it into the team that runs Hampstead Heath
  • providing interviewing skills support to staff undergoing a restructure in the IS Division
  • coaching heads of services at the Barbican, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Markets dept and Port Authority
  • designing a programme for the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) to improve inter-department communication and team working
  • running team building workshops in many of the Departments including Open Spaces, The Barbican, The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, The Markets Department and Children’s and Community Services 

Many of these projects combine training with one to one or team coaching, facilitated workshops and consultancy to address the needs.
