The Case for Kindness at Work

It is World Kindness Day this Friday. The cynical point of view would question whether we need an awareness day to try and encourage people to be nice to each other.

But when you look at statistics around how we treat each other at work, the reason becomes frighteningly clear.

Harvard Business Review reported that 98% of people surveyed had experienced incivility at work.

Another shows the impact of this discourteous behaviour at work – not just for the people on the receiving end of it, but for those who witness it too. One experiment showed a 58% drop in creativity and participants performing 61% worse in tasks after being belittled.

And rudeness is catching – people who experience rudeness are then more likely to be rude to others according to the University of Florida

(and although these are US based studies, there is much evidence to support similar trends in the UK).

So let’s use World Kindness Day as a chance to reverse this damaging and inappropriate behaviour at work and make an effort to be kind to our colleagues. 

Try picking just 2 things from the list below and doing them today – see what effect it has and let us know. 

  1. compliment 2 people in your department today
  2. smile and say hello to someone you get into the lift with
  3. buy a colleague a coffee
  4. ring someone at work rather than just emailing them, so you can have a conversation!
  5. hold a door open for someone
  6. ask a colleague about their weekend – with genuine interest
  7. thank someone for something they have done
  8. offer to help someone with a task/finding information/directions
  9. tell someone what you appreciate about them
  10. give your next 3 emails a friendlier tone

Then challenge yourself to pick 2 more and keep the momentum going!!
