Managing Unacceptable Behaviour at Work Post Brexit

Posted by Tracy Powley 29/06/16

IntegrityOne of the deeply concerning effects of Brexit is that it seems to have unleashed a torrent of nasty xenophobic feeling.

Comments such as “You can pack your bags – you are going home” and “No more Polish vermin” have been widely reported over the last few days and, worryingly, these incidents are not just playing out “on the streets,” but tipping into workplaces too. One man reported his Polish wife had received hateful texts from his co workers telling her to go home; a woman suddenly being asked by her colleagues where she was born...

Now, more than ever, organisations need to make a stand against unacceptable behaviour in workplaces.

We would put money on the fact that most organisational values include Team work or Collaboration or Respect or Fairness...so now is the time to make those words count.

When intolerance and bigotry spill over into the workplace, managers have a duty to deal with it. And organisations have a duty to support their managers in dealing with it.

This is an opportunity to show that these values are not just empty rhetoric on a website, but genuinely help to guide how we deal with the Brexit fallout...

Stella Chandler and I founded Focal Point on a shared belief that a training course run in isolation doesn't work. We passionately believe there must be support both before and after the training or coaching session itself for it to make a difference. When I am not facilitating sessions with clients or looking at ways to grow the Focal Point business, you will find me in a calming yoga class...
